There are people -- women -- who claim that he's capable of being quite
sweet and charming, and not at all squicky.  I rather suspect that if he was
a child these days, he'd be in treatment for Asperger's or social anxiety
disorder or something like that.

I've had *minimal* interaction with him a couple of times, and I have to say
that he reminds me of a professor I worked for as an undergrad, who had a
terrible reputation for being socially clueless and also for hitting on the
undergrad women.  I actually found him, well, sweet and charming, perhaps
because he was *not* hitting on me, and he admired my brain.  (Though I did
go through some doubts over whether his not hitting on me meant that I was
impossibly ugly...)  The odd part for me was trying to convince other
undergrads that I had not slept with him to get the job in his lab; I got it
early in the summer, when most other students weren't around, and when they
returned, there I was working for the "lech."  And people thought of me as a
nice girl :)
