I'd call "regimental" and "laundry day formalwear" euphemisms.  In
English we use euphemisms to avoid directly discussing or naming a
touchy subject.  Sex, cursing, excretion, sometimes s*xual
orientation (less so now than a generation ago), sometimes politics
-- any touchy subject will do.

Which, of course, reminds me of Cordelia's list of rules of What Not
To Talk About With Whom (bringing the threat neatly back OT).
