There was little other choice, unless one enjoyed the role of token or 
ioslatee.

Lois' work came in post feminist revolution.  Feminist SF of writers such as 
Joanna Russ and Suzette Haden Elgin isn't getting attention these days, and 
Harlequin just killed its Bombshell line with go-getter heroines.... (it 
wasn't quite SF/F, but had writers who were from SF/F writing backgrounds, 
such as Doranna Durgin).
