I concur with the ZoneAlarm suggestion.  I have been using it for years, 
and it has save me several time from Zero Day exploits.  I now also use 
a hardware box switch/firewall/wireless access point/gateway/router.  My 
wireless network is thus double protected.  I recommend a hardware 
firewall for connecting up even while traveling, even though it is one 
more thing to carry.  Any of the major brands will do: Linksys, D-link, 
Netgear, to name three.
