It's a common phenomenon. As the page says, it's an incomplete
list; I know of several additions that could be made, including
some well known rivers (notably, the Indus River). I haven't
registered at Wikipedia yet, but I just might to add them to that
page.

This phenomenon happens with ordinary words too: 'lukewarm' and
'rice paddy' are redundant in the exact same manner.
