I seem to recall a non-alcoholic version of Cynar, bottled in Toronto in 
the 60s and 70s; it was a sort of artichoke flavoured soda, marketed in 
Little Italy as a digestive. (I was much more inclined to drink Brio 
Chinotto with my pizza anyway, as it reminds me of Dr. Pepper.)

Googling Cynar Dry reveals that their website is down, but Cynar 
Beverages Ltd still seems to be in business in Etobicoke.

The point to this stuff seemed to be that the bitterness of the 
artichoke enhanced the natural sweetness of whatever you were eating, 
and therefor made everything else taste better. Sorta like eating a toad 
in the morning, I guess ... the rest of your day is bound to improve!
