Evangelion?  It never makes any sense.  Evidently, they intended to 
make many more episodes, and suddenly, had the rug snatched out from 
under them, and had to wrap it up hurriedly.  The last three episodes 
really stink, with nearly zero production values and dime-store animation.

They tried to make a movie to cover just the end of the show, and it 
apparently leaves as many questions as did the original ending.
