The thing about Eva is that you *have* to start at the
beginning.  You really can't come into the middle
because you need the buildup and the backstory.

The show makes sense *to me*, mainly because, I think,
I watched it in order from episode 1.  And, yes, it
does play with existentialism and apocalysm, and if
you let it it can give you a mindfuck par excellence. 
However, there is also a reason why, when Gainax made
the movie 'End of Evangelion', they advertised it as
'What was happening *outside* Shinji's head during
episodes 25 and 26'.

It may help to keep that in mind - a lot of the show's
perspective shifts and continuity flips are due to the
fact that our main viewpoint is a fourteen year old
boy who is, quite frankly, your classic unreliable
narrator.
