Americandy manufacturers do that, and it is an ADM thing.  ADM is
responsible for getting corn syrup into everything imaginable.

Corn syrup is only called for in the old fashioned recipes for
certain *kinds* of candy--and this is not high-fructose corn
syrup, which is what See's uses, it is regular Karo-type corn
syrup.  Corn syrup is an American product.  It is NOT called for
in any European chocolate bonbon recipes.

As Agnes points out below, it is possible to make a pure glucose
sugar syrup.  I've done it, and the taste is different and
superior.  Sugar syrup is the preferred sweetener for tea in
Japan because unlike sugar, it dissolves and unlike corn syrup,
it does not have a cloying aftertaste.

Yes.  Japanese candy makers do too.

It's been downgraded to a sensitivity, because I can now tolerate
it if I don't eat too much of it at one time.  But it isn't good
for me, and I really shouldn't.  For a great many years it used
to make me quite ill.  This started in 1992-93 with my disastrous
pregnancy and continued for some 5-7 years afterward.
