I personally figured that her milk just hadn't come in yet. It's been a 
while since I've read HH, but I think I presumed that the baby was 
within a day's journey (either it was close to her home, or they 
travelled with her for some of the way).  Though I think it'd be some 
kind of torture to be travelling right after childbirth (and I don't 
even want to think about horseback riding then).

***  One may presume that Hallana, as a sorceress, physician, and dual 
saint, had supernatural aid in dealing with the physiological details.  
Which single-viewpoint Ingrey, being Ingrey, wouldn't much notice or 
think about anyway.

Note she did not ride, but traveled on a pallet in a wagon, at least 
till that last leg into the mountains.

Also, this was baby #3.  One does grow more confident and casual with 
repetition, barring glitches, not to mention have one's support system 
more fine-turned.  She likely wouldn't have done it with baby #1, 
despite divine pressure.
