I could see a stick being a good thing when one lives in a crowded house
with many other people underfoot, including at one point small children,
who've now grown into somewhat thoughtless teenagers (Reed and Rush). I am
not sure there's enough respect for Aunt Nattie for everyone to be very
careful about keeping things picked up.
Also, all the scenes in the book where Nattie is present, an outsider (Dag)
is also present, and the stick may serve as a reminder to outsiders that
they need to be aware of the blind person's presence.
There are a few hints also that Nattie has more disability than blindness,
that in fact she might need the stick for balance.

The s*x scenes in the TSK books are still a joy to reread. I'm not normally
so fond of s*x scenes, but these are just what I like -- a lot of focus on
the inward reactions of the people having s*x, with just enough detail so
one can picture which body parts are doing what :) Tab A -Slot B (or Tab A
- Tongue B!!!) are strongly implied but not labeled.
