Depends. If you are using the FAT files system, (and most USB drives
do) you are limited not only to the no. of files in the root directory,
but the size of the files can be no larger than 4G. If a problem like
that occurs on a USB drive, try reformatting it with the NTFS file
system (in Windows) or even ext2/ext3 (in Linux, if the particular drive
firmware allows it). Older versions of NTFS also have certain limits,
although I don't have the exact specs. on hand.
