its interesting that you find Elli to be similar to a male character and 
therefore not-to-be-criticized.  I find her similar to a certain type of 
male character too - the one-dimensional action hero, with no goal but 
shoot-em-up and rise in the ranks. she has no firm connection to her family 
at Kline station (that we hear of, it might take place off screen).  I seem 
to remember that her cousin on Kline station didn't recognize her, was that 
long after her face-change?  and wouldn't such a huge life-changing thing 
like getting her face melted off be cause to write home - send pictures?

she seems to interact well with her subordinates and so perhaps she's just 
like the career soldiers with no outside life I find so boring - and 
annoying, when they run rough-shod over the civilians they come across.
