Well, the latter brings to mind W*b*r and H*n*r H*rr*ngt*n.

In general, if that person can stand vampires, Robin McKinley's 
Sunshine.  If allergic to vampires, uh, Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment 
is the obvious choice, assuming it hasn't already been read.
