The Belisarius series by David Drake and Eric Flint - the first book is _An
Oblique Approach_ - historical

S.M. Stirling wrote another series based off Belisarius, but the main
character is called Raj Whitehall; I only read the sequels, so I have no
idea what the first book is, sorry.  - history in the future

You could try some of Eddings - _The Redemption of Althalus_, _Belgarath the
Sorcerer_ or the Elenium/Tamuli.  - Fantasy

_The Name of the Wind_ by Patrick Rothas is a trade paperback I picked up
recently with some of those elements.  Less of the military and more of the
one-man against the world.  - Fantasy

_The Lies of Locke Lamora_ and its sequal _Red Seas Under Red Skies_ are
very good; again with the one-man/small group against the world.  I was
impressed enough with these to buy after reading.  - Fantasy
