As they are in Victoria, Australia. State schools (public schools) and
private schools all have school uniforms. The real differences are in how
well the uniform policy is enforced and how much detail is in it. I went to
a girls' school and it specified that we could only have one pair of gold
earings and a watch as jewellery, you could dye your hair as long as it
remained a natural colour and no make-up. All of which is unlikely to be
considered at most state schools.
The few schools that don't have uniforms are Montessori, Stiener or in some
other way unusual.

Indeed. Me too. It's one less thing for students to create an us and them
situation with. It may also mean they have less to distract them from
school.....although I'm not entirely convinced of that.
When I was in school I really did not see the point of all the things people
did to sabotage the uniform policy. Things like rolling skirts up under
jumpers and then wearing the jumpers all the time to hide it.
