Webscriptions has been the v3 one.
Mobipocket is now up to v6.
Arnold at Webscriptions has upgraded the format used in the Baen eBooks from v3
to v4 for new eBooks from Dec 2007 onwards, and to make the change clear has
changed the extension used from .prc to .mobi
(which is I gather the preferred extension to eliminate the confusion with palm
doc files).
The deciding issue here is Amazons Kimble - which works best with V4 (but IIRC
doesn't yet support v5 or v6)
The issue involved is the extra meta data stored in the eBook file - not the
text but the Authors Name, Book Title, Category of book, Thumbnail cover image
etc.
The V3 mobipocket eBook format was missing some of these.
I gather that the newer formats with the extra metadata is preferred by the
latest versions of Reading software, especially the parts that act as indexes
and library organisers, e.g. the Bookshelf in V6 of the Mobipocket Desktop
Reader, and the similar functions on new eBook readers such as the Bookeen
Cybook and the Amazon Kimble - it isn't the eBooks themselves, but the screen
displays that show links to multiple books.
If you have v6 of the Mobipocket Desktop (reader) software installed on a
Windows system, look at the Bookshelf display for a directory that contains
both .prc and .mobi format eBooks - especially the metadata shown on the right
side of the screen.
Personally, I think the best solution is for Webscriptions to offer eBooks both
in v3 as .prc and v4 as .mobi.
Susan, I suggest that you email Arnold, or post at Baen's Bar, rather than just
post here, so that he knows you are having problems.
Martin.
