it seems to me that there are two seperate arguments for the martya-enrique
thing.
the first batch were, sure he'd like to marry here, but why should she want
to marry a socially, financially and all-around clueless but admittedly
brilliant scientist? do business with him, sure. make the brains run on
time - i still love that phrase - can be done in the lab, and likely martya
will run the office and learn to do finances too. quite well, at that - she
comes from smart parents, and no doubt tante cordy saw to her basic
education, and tsipis* will be delighted to guide her further education.
but why should she marry him? it seems some people on the list are rebeling
against the ancient mindset of, why hire a housekeeper when marriying one is
cheaper? and comes with side benefits that are legally sanctioned, instead
of illicit and might lead to illegal babies and nasty gossip. so why would
martya marry enrique, when she could manage him, get rich, and attract
anyone she wants? or heck, she might get rich and take up travel. visit
ehr little sis on beta and see what the fuss about the orb is about. travel
more and meet some galactic who shared her interests. do we even know what
her interests are? besides not chaperoning her sister, and that's only a
negative.
the second batch was, hey, some people -really like- absent minded professor
types. and some are quite good looking. and some smell yummy (although
possibly those have a firm grasp of the whole cleanliness deal. nothing
like skin and hair that hasn't seen soap for two weeks to change a person's
smell). and of course being together long term does something, too, as
witness the whole boss/secretary cliche. maybe she won't go out looking for
a different woman-appreciating fellow if she has one on hand. and if she is
the managing type, he might just be perfect for her, after all.
hmmm. i suppose we'll just need another book to find out what happens next,
eh? i like that just fine :)
ziviya, overly analytical and needing something new to read
* how do you pronounce his name? the first time i read the book, my brain
kept cross-referencing the other tsepesh - vlad, aka count drakul. that
made for very, very weird images.
