While doing this, I was considering the importance of being needed and having a role. Can people think of examples of those without roles in the VOrkiverse - or Chalion?

I am not 100% sure I get the question correctly - sleep deprivation (I
did to myself, I know, but still).

But it seems to me the perfect example from the 5GU would be Caz when
he realizes that his position as Iselle's secretary is taken. He so
quickly sinks into despair.

And, also, Ista after her mother's death. She doesn't know who she is,
what her role is - and she wants to run away, even though she knows
that such an escape will lead her nowhere, she'll have to go back.
(well, she's wrong, but that's beside the point).

On the other hand, there are those who define their positions...
differently. Say, the widow-pilgrim in Dy Cabon's party (Caria? Gah, I
really dislike being this tired)

I think that, as anywhere, being without a position is a matter of
perspective. More or less.

Just my 2 cents :)
