He sensed her emotions with his ground rather than saw with his
eyes. Somewhere in the book he says that Lakewalkers use words
applying to other senses when discussing what they experience
from their grounds. Obviously this is a case in point.
It just occurred to me that most Lakewalkers, if deprived of
their grounds, would not be very good at interpreting other
people's emotions. They've become so used to using their grounds
that they probably don't pay much attention to people's
expressions. It wouldn't be that way for kids, since groundsense
comes in during puberty, but for most people the ability to
interpret expressions will probably atrophy as they get older.
