I have the same thing happen to me, to a certain extent.  I did read some 
Vorkosigan fanfic, just the stuff on the Dendarii webpage, early on, not 
long after I read the books for the first time, and while a couple of the 
pieces have become sort of quasi-canonical for me (the one Pouncer wrote 
about Bothari, Koudelka and five-year-old Miles, in particular), I didn't 
make it through most of the rest because they just didn't feel like "my" 
Vorkosigans.  Not that they weren't perfectly capable of being someone 
else's Vorkosigans...

who absolutely adores the whole "bite us, Yeltar" cycle, though -- and 
almost thinks it would be worth going through Bujoldia just to wind up in 
the Nexus someday (the operative word being almost)
