Heh.  Another listee  (hey, Mary!) and I have got a whole backstory figured 
out for  Cavilo.  She's the only Bujoldian villain I actually *like.*  In the 
 
sense of sympathy, that is.

I find it awfully hard to humanize Ges, because he didn't really enjoy  
getting his victims out of his way, he enjoyed hurting them and watching their  
pain.  That's the real "scum of the service" or anywhere else.   IMHO.  As far as 
psychopaths, I think Ryoval and Metzov weren't that far  apart, but Ryoval 
was more successful, and had more scope for villainy, not that  he was more 
evil.  Cavilo is--interesting.
