general disclaimer, i haven't read metzov or ryoval's stories in quite some 
while, and may have details wrong

don't forget: when we meet ryoval, he only looked like a handsome young 
aristocrat.  actually he was over one hundred (i think) and had plenty of 
experience in pure nastyness, as well as nasty ideas for hire, since he had 
committed patricide, fratricide[1], adn torture of sisters and pretty 
younger brothers.  baron fell was one of hte younger brothers, (was he 12 
when he and lily climbed thru the sewers? [2]) and he was seriously feeling 
his age.

metzov, on the other hand, was heading for upper middle age.  he wasn't old 
enough to retire yet.  he was definitely nasty, and to be tossed out of the 
barrayaran army for nastyness takes some doing [3], but he had no refinement 
at it.

perhaps a comparison between rapier and axe would be appropriate here.

ziviya, posting on topic, and with footnotes yet!  what fun!

[1] the fem. versions of these are matricide and what?  i know there's a 
word for it...

[2] i look at that word and think of a group of women, sitting with needle 
and thread and gossiping... and think of two scared teenagers slogging thru 
the muck... my brain hurts.

[3] although, as we find out in a civil affair, a ticket to camp permafrost 
can be obtained by ticking off the emporer 3 times in one month :)
