Eh, I agree with you.   I never did finish the trilogy.  The only
books of Tolkien's I was ever able to finish were edited
posthumously by his son, and read more like say, a collection of
myths than a novel.   I just don't like his writing style.

You made it further than I did even before getting stuck.
