Salic law was not in force in Spain until the Bourbons took over in
the 18th Century. That's why Isabella could become Queen of Castille
in the first place. Where F & I were extremely unlucky was in their
children: the heir to the throne would have been their daughter
Juana, who was in fact insane (historically, every queen regnant
named Juana or Joan was insane, I believe). Her father, Ferdinand,
acted as regent, and on his passing, he son, Charles I of Spain (and
later Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), a Habsburg, became King of
Spain in place of his mother. Even so, the Habsburgs didn't impose
Salic law on Spain.
