In Kentucky, there's a suburb of Lexington called "VerSALES" and
spelled "Versailles."
When I saw it written and pronounced it in the French way people
just stared at me, so I learned to say "VerSALES".
However, I'd moved to Kentucky to study history in graduate
school, and as a TA, I was mortified when I found myself talking
about Louis XIV and the court at "VerSALES" in a classroom.
