Aww.
Have you tried "Undo"? Word has these auto-replace options, but if you
undo once right after they happen (Ctrl+Z), the symbols return to what
they were.
That usually enables me to type the symbols I want, eventually.
Another option, if it will work, is to try # # # (with intervals) -
that way it won't make it into that line.
To get rid of the line, I've found the following trick, though it
takes a bit of tinkering: Open the Tables and Borders toolbar; select
a few lines above and below the line with the mouse; and press "No
Borders" button on the toolbar.Technically, the line is a 'in-between'
border. Sometimes though, it makes it move to one end or the other of
the selected area; I repeat until it does disappear.
I hope this helps,
Kalina

I made the mistake of typing three ###s as a divider between sections in a document, and when I did, Word created this big thick line instead of just leaving my three ###s like I wanted. How do I get rid of this big thick line and what can I use in the way of a symbol in this manner that will stay the way I typed it without my having to backspace immediately? (I use an Alphasmart which is basically a portable keyboard emulator -- stopping in the middle of an upload to backspace is not an option) Asterisks are booby-trapped the same way, only with a different kind of line. I'm way past the point where I can backspace right after they've been typed. No form of deleting and/or cutting is making it go away.
