Other group members have mentioned how to format the paragraph to remove the border.

If you go into the Tools>Autocorrect Options.... dialog, you can see all the things that Word will do without you asking. If you uncheck the "Replace text as you type" in the Autocorrect tab, and uncheck whatever you find problematic in the Autoformat tab, you may be able to get Word to behave less like a stroppy secretary and more like an obedient machine.
