[LMB] Frying Pan of Doom

... or lack thereof.

i have been re-reading beguilement for (lack of anything new...)  and got 
stuck on the scene in the farmhouse kitchen where stupid sunny is pestering 
fawn.  as he talks nasty to her, she looks longingly at the  iron frying pan 
nearby.  it would be a perfect fit for his face.

i wanted to see that.  couldn't wait.  sunny would look a lot better with a 
bloody nose, and a permanently lumpy nose, don't you all think?

then he gropes her, and she reaches for the pan.  yay!  then dag comes in 
and fawn doesn't have to protect herself anymore.  darn.  stupid sunny 
escapes with no more than a rip in his breeches, a la cartoon villain being 
chased away by valiant dog with scrap of cloth in his teeth.   rats!  foiled 
again!

why did fawn wait so long to grab the frying pan and chase stupid sunny 
away?  is it bec. 'good girls don't'?  but she isn't a good girl anymore, in 
regards to sunny.  that gives him the right to grope her any old time. 
doesn't it also give her the right to do the unthinkable - hit him so hard 
the pan gets bent out of shape?

if she hit him in the face so hard he fell, is fawn too honorable to hit him 
while he's down?  if dag walked in after he fell down, would he encourage 
her to let him run or to finish the job?

does fawn even know that a heavy blow to the back of hte head could be 
fatal, or at least give a really permanent personality change?

then dag walks in.  fawn takes her hand away from the frying pan.  why? 
would dag of all people disprove of her chasing an unwanted man out of her 
'tent'?   would he not want her to defend herself against a predator?  bec 
sunny may be a 'nice guy' for his bride violet and other folks, but not to 
fawn.  she knows that.  dag knows that.  so why does she not give sunny 
what's coming to him?

how would the next few chapters have been different if dag hand't shamed him 
and said 'next time bring some friends'?  sunny might not have gathered 
those friends and suborned the twins.  he might have focused revenge on fawn 
alone, or given her up as a bad job and made up a story of RandomStrangers 
TM banging up his nose, and you should see the other guys!  stupid sunny 
would never admit a girl with a frying pan re-arranged his face.

knowing that pat wrede is a friend of lois, nad having immensely enjoyed 
'the frying pan of doom' in the enchanted forest, i really really wanted 
lois to follow through when fawn started to grab the pan.
