Possible but not done. As in, I've seen it done, by
someone who both played violin and sang, but neither
were of the person's best quality. (It was a dare and

Yes and no. Yes, they are the same thing, but I don't
know about different quality - I've never heard
someone who calls them 'violins' speak of 'fiddles',
except as part of a title such as 'Fiddler on the
Roof', and I've never heard anyone who regularly
refers to 'fiddles' speak of 'violins'. I always
thought it was a regional dialect thing, like the way
I refer to a 'bonnet' of a car but Americans of my
acquaintance speak of the 'hood'.
