To my knowledge, a fiddle is just a violin. I have heard pro
violinists speak of their "fiddle". However, the traditional country
fiddle was played tucked against the upper arm, not under the
chin. When played as a fiddle, the instrument may have a flatter
bridge, requiring less arm movement to change strings and making it
easier to play chords (three strings), but the instrument is the
same, regardless.

Basically, when it is being bought, it is a fiddle. When it is being
sold, it is a vioin.
