Hadn't thought of it previously, but might add that, holding the 
fiddle against the arm or in the crook of the elbow, the ability of 
the fiddler to move his left hand up and down the strings is greatly 
compromised, one might think.  Held under the chin, the violin is 
secure enough that the left hand may be used for virtually anything, 
back and forth.  A completely different style of playing undoubtedly results.
