I think we have evidence that the reason that birth outside wedlock 
wasn't a problem was that both man and woman would know when she was 
fertile, so both partners would be well aware of the 
possibilities.  I suppose even with Lakewalkers, there are men who 
don't give a damn what they do (I have been told by one man that he 
never would use a condom, and to Hell with the consequences) and that 
a form non-consentual sex could occur (interpersonal relationships 
being as complicated as they are, after all--there are men who just 
won't take "no" for an answer), but once such proclivities were 
known, one hopes that Lakewalker society was able to handle him so he 
wouldn't or couldn't do that in the future.  Ghod knows, our own 
society is completely incapable of handling such things.
