The whole area of sibling position, sibling rivalry, and what effect it has on your prospects in later life is a big, and uncomfortable can of worms. Only children are perceived in various ways, to do with people's expectations of family size, their own sense of how they were treated in childhood and their expectations about what "normal" children are.
I would agree that bad parenting makes spoilt children. I would add to that, that a world in which families are stuck in isolated units, rather than a community, makes it much harder to be a parent.
