convert files to its format (via USB is free, 10 cents otherwise), or
you send it to Amazon's website for them to do the conversion for you
(10 cents). With the Sony Reader, all I do is copy my PDFs (Sony has a
nice guide on how to format PDFs for it so it looks best), text files,
RTFs etc to a memory card (either Memory Stick, or regular SD), and it
appears automatically when I stick the card into it.
Yes, it does DRM, but it's like the iPod - you can choose to use DRM'd
files, or just choose to use non-DRM'd files. Side benefit is no
converting, though poorly formatted PDFs do show up... poorly. Unlike
my eBookWise reader, I don't need to do any conversion or formatting -
copy to card, stick it in slot, done.
The audio player on it is worthless, though. If you listen to music
while you read, keep your iPod or other player handy.
It's one of the few things Sony's actually done well (I think someone
once said that there are brilliant engineers at Sony who can design
great products, but they are hobbled by incompetent management with
NIH (not invented here) syndrome and a tendency to shoot themselves in
the foot). The current revision of the eReader goes back to standards
(they don't require a USB driver - it appears as a regular disk),
so...
Just my opinion
