Bravo!  You summed Alys up in a nutshell, and I totally agree with you. 

I especially like Alys' sarcasm, and the fact that she is loyal to 
Cordelia from the start. The traumatic birth of Ivan, I think, was part 
of the epiphany for her, and definitely (in my eyes) the event that 
glued Alys and Cordelia together.

I always thought that LMB pulled that one off masterly.
