I know that when I was a kid, my books-read total was much larger than 
books-bought; I was a voracious patron of the school and city libraries. 
More recently - i.e., in the last three years, for which I have complete 
data - the two have been in close balance. There's an observer effect 
there, though; since I already own many books I haven't yet read, I 
don't want to fall further behind, so I've been restraining my purchasing.
