I know I'm going to be very unpopular for saying this, but to be brutally
honest, I think that part of the problem is that the first SK book simply
isn't as engaging as the rest of LMB's books, and we've run out of things to
say.
Back on topic :), I personally prefer Miles' universe to Lois' fantasy

I don't think it has to do with a break down of scifi vs. fantasy. My favs
are equally divided between both, I love the first 2 Chalion books, I love
equally the Cordelia novels, and I'd hate to try and choose a fav Miles
book! The very first LMB book I read, The Memory Ring, addicted me to her
books forever.
What I love about these books is the realness of the characters, the
intensity of the action and the clever & bold ways problems are solved. I
could identify with or admire the main characters. With TSK:B, I don't find
any of that. I'm not disappointed or upset with the novel, since in many
ways it reads as a set-up novel (setting up the world, the rules of magic,
etc), but neither can I honestly rave about it.
It's the kind of book I may have to re-read six or seven times before I
enjoy it.
