Desperately playing catchup here...
Several hundred posts ago Pouncer wondered about bone knives.
It seems to me that for the knife to kill the malice it has to be
in contact with a living person ("taught to die", etc.). And perhaps
the connection has to be completely human in origin, so you
couldn't have an intervening spear shaft.
This kind of magic is a bit like the death magic/miracle in
Curse of Chalion. Both require someone to give up their life
voluntarily to make the thing work.
Most of the time when reading TSK:Beguilement I didn't think
of it as fantasy at all.[1] I grew up in surroundings not much
different from Fawn's, and the landscape is so familiar I could
smell it as I read.
