the big scientist (name?) wanted to live on jackson's whole rather than 
beta, until he realized that 'lack of restriction' doesn't mean 'do whatever 
you want'. it meant
'do whatever the boss pays you for', not the same at all.  then he watned to 
go to barrayar, home of the witness protection program, not to beta, home of 
good behavior.
