The Nakamuras are living so well that if Kimiko wants a place of
her own she can probably afford it. But I doubt that she does.

Kaito is very traditional--if you listen to the Japanese dialogue
it's very apparent in the way Hiro addresses his father, and the
nuances don't really come out in translation--for one thing, all
Hiro's verbs are polite-form, and Hiro's father speaks plainly to
him most of the time.

But he doesn't seem like the kind of Japanese parent who would be
too interfering because Kimiko's managed to build up a lot of
cred for herself in the company.

I am fairly sure their mother is dead. Hiro, being the kind of
guy he is, would talk about her more if she weren't. Hiro is the
kind of son Japanese mothers love to dote on, a little unworldly
and very intellectual, but he doesn't seem to have been coddled
or doted on much.

Thank goodness, he also definitely doesn't have
Oldest-Son-Disease (some eldest sons in wealthy Japanese and
Chinese families are lazy asses who founder in their careers and
don't do well in relationships unless they're catered to--I
married one like that and heard all about it from friends).

Ando, however, is the typical young guy who doesn't really want
to get married because it would be economic suicide--he can't
afford to pay Japanese housing prices and support a wife who's
been forced out of the job market. They like karaoke, bar
hostesses, casual sex and are incredibly fond of internet p*rn.
They are however no good for American girls who want to stay in
Japan (they will always date American women, it gets them points
with their buddies who are all irritated about American men
dating Japanese girls and taking them back to America), because
if they do get serious, they will want to come to America to
live. Can you tell I've dated Ando?

Yeah, I thought you could :) OK, it's a stereotype, but I
have met dozens of guys like this and made the mistake of falling
for one or two, and I mean it in the *nicest* way. They all
thought I was very funny.
