Combining this with Dorian's comment I have to say, one reason
I'd never hang my laundry out to dry (aside from the fact that I
hate stiff laundry and hate ironing) is that once I made the
mistake of leaving my laundry alone in a laundromat while the
dryer was going. I came back, the dryer stopped and I unloaded
it, folded my clothing and took it upstairs. When I started to
put my clothing away I realised that some hentai freak had stolen
every single pair of knickers. Which in those days of not having
lots of clothes was every freaking pair of knickers I owned
except the one I had on which I washed by hand every night for
three days until I got paid.

Now you're thinking, ah, but she's a big city girl. True, but I
lived in Kentucky at the time.

I really would not trust people not to steal my clothes if I left
them out of doors for several hours at a time. I just wouldn't.
There are things that I own that have to be hung up to dry and I
do it inside the apartment. (I also live in fear of birds
sh*tting on the laundry like someone else who was mentioned here,
probably because I myself have been shat on 3 times in the years
that I've lived here and I know there are a lot of pigeons here.)

Sigh.

Of course this is the land of fog and mist so no-one out here
would dare to tell me my clothes would line dry in an hour...
