Thanks* to those who were able to respond to my inquiry, both for the 
many resources, and for the advice.  Much appreciated.  And I've already 
subscribed to the kanji-a-day mailing list.

I wonder if anyone who has used Rosetta Stone might make a comment? 
It's not free or cheap, but it has a reputation.  I might luck out and 
find an old version cheap, or get a nice gift or something.

Also, any advice on setting up a computer to use Japanese?  In WinXP? 
In GNU/Linux/XyzBSD?
