Well, going from the way Ista recalls the treatment at
the hands of the Mother, I'd say the Mother at least
treats hers as 'working' pets - the cow that gets
patted while she's milked, the sheepdog that gets a
pat and extra bone as well as a "Good dog!" after
doing a hard round-up, the cat that gets extravagant
praise and an extra treat after bringing back several
dead mice to her owner's feet.  Treated affectionately
and well, and given treats - but expected to work for
those treats.
