I would absolutely not want an elderly, crotchety, bigoted
relative (I have a lot of them) as my *sole companion* on a
*desert island*.  Even positing that this is the way to treat
elderly relatives (I don't think it's precisely respectful of
elders to assume they can't learn anything), one does that
because one has to put up with them for short periods of time and
knows it won't last forever.  I don't think it's possible to be
amusingly dishonest 24/7 with someone you depend on for survival.
