I've bought books from bookmarks, but the path is usually that I
become interested in a book but I don't know the title/author very
well, so the bookmark is something I use to let me find the book when
I want to buy/order it.  And I've occasionally noticed a new book by
an author I like because of bookmarks I see at the library or
bookstore. ("What, is THAT out now?  Give me one.")

So giving bookmarks out at conventions for upcoming books would be
worthwhile, I'd guess, but they are probably not that successful as
cold sells.
