Generally when I've advised friends to BE (not so much play)
harder to get I have NOT meant "say no when you mean yes and try
to get him to make you do it anyway." I've meant, "don't have
sex on the first date if you know you will be broken-hearted
should there not be a second one" and "don't drive a u-haul to
your second date no matter how fine things are going."
Many men seem to interpret this advice as advice to say no when
you mean yes because I am advising my friend not to have sex even
if she wants to, and those men (kindly note: not all men) think
that if a woman wants to have sex, she should, and she should
just not expect anything because of it. But not all women have
that much control over what they feel for a man after sex. I
expect some men don't have control over those feelings either,
but it's less culturally acceptable for a man to admit this.
