Disclaimer: I lost my father and sister in separate car accidents.
The one that took my father would have killed my mother as well but
for her seat belt.
This article is questionable, and on at least one instance false: it
states Australia as having seat belt laws for drivers only. This is
incorrect, they must be worn by all occupants, with legal onus being
on the driver, in most (all?) jurisdictions. In Victoria a car with 4
unbelted occupants is enough to cost the driver his licence (1).

(1) penalty is a fine and 3 demerit points per offence. 12 points
within 3 years causes a suspension of licence.
