According to what's in Wikipedia, systems like this are under
development -- not "faster" (you want them as fast as possible!)
but multiple small inflators to allow some control over force and
shape.  But the current designs aren't that complex -- it's just
a single inflator, effectively a small explosive charge (or in some
cases a module of compressed gas, with the explosive acting as
a valve) chosen to produce gas.
