One of the things that seems to have caused problems with the world-building
of the Tortall world-frame is that she is stuck with decisions she made
early in her career as a writer. Yeah I have to agreee about the characters
with very modern attitudes. One of the things I liked about Terrier is the
incomes of the Dogs (militia/police force) comes entirely from bribes.

I'm going to nitpick about Daine and Numair. She's 15/16 when they become
involved and he does propose then but she's not silly enough to marry him
then. They don't marry until Trickster's Choice, IIRC, and by then I
estimate that Daine would be about 25. I'll also say that when I first read
the Immortals that didn't set off my squick meter because I was young enough
not to see the problem.

I think one of the other reasons why the Tamora Pierce books appealed so
strongly is that the characters are so passionate about what they do.
